A UL 2849 certified e-bike has had its electrical system evaluated against requirements addressing electrical and fire hazards. The evaluation considers the electrical drive system, battery system, and charger together.
That system-level scope matters when you choose a bike you will ride, store, and charge regularly.
UL 2849 E-bike electrical system
Covers the electrical system, including the battery, electrical drive system, and charger combination.
UL 2271 Light electric vehicle batteries
Applies to batteries for light electric vehicle applications.
Look for the standard number and the product it covers. Battery certification alone does not establish UL 2849 certification for the complete e-bike electrical system.

A model name or general safety badge does not tell you the full scope of a certification. Check these details against the bike you plan to buy.

Look for the standard number and confirm whether it covers the e-bike electrical system or the battery.

The exact model and configuration
Match the model, version, and battery configuration to the record, especially across different generations.

Check your space and lifting needs
Measure your storage space and check the complete bike's weight before lifting it onto a vehicle rack or carrying it upstairs. A smaller wheel does not automatically make the whole bike easier to lift.

If your storage space is away from an outlet, compare electric bikes with removable batteries. Consider how you will remove, carry, and reconnect the battery. Keep the charger and any replacement battery matched to your exact model.

Which Mokwheel e-bikes are certified to UL 2849?
Basalt 2.0, Basalt ST 2.0, Obsidian, Obsidian 2.0, Obsidian ST 2.0, Scoria 2.0, and Tor Plus are certified to UL 2849. Start with the frame style that fits you, then compare suspension and wheel size for your usual route. For model-specific certification details, contact our team.
Is a UL-certified battery the same as a UL 2849 certified e-bike?
No. Battery certification and e-bike electrical-system certification cover different scopes. UL 2271 addresses batteries for light electric vehicles, while UL 2849 addresses the e-bike electrical system. When buying a complete bike, check its system certification instead of relying only on a certification claim about the battery or its cells.
How can I verify an e-bike's UL certification?
Match the model, standard, and certification number to the issuing organization's records. For certification issued by UL Solutions, use UL Product iQ. If another laboratory issued it, use that laboratory's directory. Ask for documentation linking the bike's retail name to the certified model when the names differ.
