Have you ever felt that urge—seeing an unnamed trail at the edge of a map and just wanting to know where it leads?
Our Mokwheel R&D team is full of riders like that—explorers who climb, turn, and drop down hills just to see what’s on the other side. We still remember when Darius, our product manager, once sent us a GPS track that ended at the edge of a canyon. He said, “I just wanted to know if I could ride there.”
That was the moment we realized: riders like him need a bike built for the unknown. An e-bike that makes “leaving on impulse” possible.
That’s why we launched the Onyx project—built for those who always want to take one step further.

Mid Drive Motor: Power Starts Here
When riders hit steep climbs, tricky starts, or uneven terrain, many e-bikes feel like they’re pushing you forward instead of moving with you. In tight trails where precise control is everything, that sudden “kick” becomes a problem.
So we asked: if this bike has to power hard and still stay under control, where should the motor go?
The answer: mid-drive.
Onyx is equipped with a mid-drive motor delivering up to 1300W peak power and 210Nm of torque. Simply put, instead of brute-force surges, the motor drives directly through the pedals and chain, syncing power with every stroke.
The benefit of a mid-drive ebike isn't just more power—it's more control. On climbs and descents, it doesn’t shove you forward—it feels like a steady hand guiding you along.
Caleb, one of our engineers, summed it up after testing a forest trail:
“For the first time, I didn’t feel like quitting halfway. I wasn’t controlling the bike—it was moving with me.”

Full Suspension, Supporting Every Landing
Early in the Onyx project, we spoke with experienced off-road riders. One rider from Arizona told us his hands went numb after just 30 minutes on rocky trails.
That’s when we realized: many e-bikes focused only on power and forgot about the rider’s body.
So we designed a brand-new suspension system for Onyx: a dual-crown hydraulic fork with 135mm travel in the front, paired with a 50mm dual-air rear shock. We tuned it carefully to balance damping efficiency with rebound response.
This allows riders on forest gravel, mountain ruts, and unpaved trails to stay free from the constant “hits” of the ground and instead focus fully on reading the line and keeping their rhythm in control.
Selena, our suspension designer, put it simply:
“We want riders to deal with the trail—not fight the bike. The suspension has to react fast enough so the bike absorbs the hit for you.”

Four-Piston Control, Built for the Mountains
During testing, we pushed Onyx into extreme conditions: long descents, soft ground, and heavy loads.
Most e-bikes with common two-piston brakes showed fading power, slower response, or poor grip after repeated hard braking. In off-road riding, “good enough” brakes never cut it.
So we equipped Onyx with four-piston hydraulic brakes. With two pistons per caliper in a symmetrical layout, they provide stronger, more even braking force.
In our downhill tests, the system heated up 30% slower than standard brakes, keeping grip and control even in the rain. In the city, that means you can still stop smoothly in emergencies.
Owen, our testing lead, put it best:
“I know I can charge downhill. But what matters more is knowing I can stop exactly where I want to.”

Two Frame Options for Real Riders
● Onyx: A classic high-step frame for off-road riders who want maximum stability and control on trails, climbs, and rough terrain.

● Onyx ST: A step-through frame for easy mounting and dismounting—perfect for new riders, shorter riders, or anyone who wants a lighter, more agile feel in daily commutes.

We won’t tell you one is “better.” We’ll just say: whether you’re ready to go further, or just getting started, there’s an Onyx built for you.
Stay out past dark, and Onyx has one more surprise
We noticed more and more riders pairing Onyx with the Mokwheel inverter—not because we pushed it, but because they wanted to stay out longer.
Some set up a projector on a mountaintop to watch the footage they just shot. Others brew coffee at camp while waiting for night to fall.
To us, that freedom is the real meaning of Onyx—it doesn’t just take you there, it makes you want to stay.

At Last, a True Answer for Mountain Terrain
Onyx isn’t our flashiest build. It’s the one we tuned most carefully—balancing the raw performance needed to conquer terrain with the comfort your body needs to keep going.
If you’ve ever held back from a ride because you feared it would be too exhausting, too slippery, or too unstable, we built this for you.
As Madeline, our Director of Product Development, said:
“Onyx isn’t about making you ride farther. It’s about making sure you never hesitate before you start.”

You know that trail you've always hesitated to take? Onyx was built for that exact moment.
