Should I choose a hub-drive or mid-drive electric bike?
Choose a hub-drive e-bike for straightforward commuting, recreational riding, and routes that are mostly flat or moderately hilly. Choose a mid-drive electric bike when steep climbs, changing elevation, or effective use of the bike’s gears matters more. Mid-drive systems place the motor near the bike’s center and power the wheel through the drivetrain, so correct shifting is important. How do I find the right e-bike size?
Start with your height and inseam, then check each model’s recommended rider-height range, standover height, reach, and minimum and maximum saddle height. Wheel diameter affects handling, stability, and storage, but it does not determine electric bike fit by itself.
- 20-inch: A 20-inch wheel is a popular choice for small electric bikes because it can support a more compact frame, lower saddle position, and easier low-speed handling. On a properly fitted model, this lower layout can help riders place a foot on the ground more quickly when stopping, improving confidence and control. What are the main differences between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bikes?
Under the three-class system used by many U.S. states, electric bikes are generally grouped by how the motor provides assistance and the speed at which that assistance ends:
- Class 1 e-bikes: Provide pedal assistance only. The motor stops assisting when the bike reaches 20 mph.
- Class 2 e-bikes: Include both pedal assistance and a throttle that can propel the bike without pedaling. Motor assistance ends at 20 mph.
- Class 3 e-bikes: Provide pedal assistance up to 28 mph. State and local laws determine rider age, helmet requirements, and where these faster electric bikes are permitted, with Class 3 models generally facing stricter access rules.
